Easter Sunday Chad was talking to our brother in-law Gabe and he mentioned that his sister raised chickens and was looking to get rid of 4 of a particular breed as she wanted a different breed. So the next Friday when we were already going near her house so we stopped by and she gave us our 4 chickens for FREE!!! :) They were stinky to transport, but they were FREE!! :)
when you disrupt chicken's lives they don't lay eggs. However, Saturday afternoon the excited cry came from the yard! HOPE FOUND AN EGG!!!!!
Shortly after Joshua found one too.
Sunday we had 3 eggs, but only 2 of them made it into the house, as Hope was trying to carry all 3 at once. This prompted Chad to say, "We need to get an egg basket." To which I said, "Why can't they just take an empty egg carton out?" And he said, "I don't know, Cuz 'Little House on the Prairie' had a basket. We need a basket." How could I argue with that logic? I bought a clearance Easter basket the next day while I was in town. :)
Joy was quite distraught that she had not been able to gather eggs yet, so Monday I assigned her egg duty. She was the first one to use the egg basket.
We have arranged to get chicks soon, however, Chad has injured his arm so he is unable to build the big coup we need to house more chickens. So we will see how all that comes together.
It seems strange, but God has seemed to open every door that needed to be opened for us to get chickens, and it seems obvious to us that God wants us to do this. We plan to plant some field corn this summer in our garden to feed the chickens in effort to keep our costs down. It has been fun to try to throw off my city girl ways and become a country girl. And I love to see their happy faces when the find eggs. Let's hope they keep this enthusiasm.

Injured his arm..... playing a silly youth group game.. maybe the youth group can build the coup!
